Door Weatherstripping & Door Seals
Door seals for every gap on a door: 262 door sweeps and door bottoms, 179 automatic door bottoms, 255 door gaskets, 181 perimeter weatherstrips, 156 astragals and meeting stiles for pairs of doors, 103 door shoes, plus garage door bottom seals, rain drips and 33 fire and smoke seals. Made by Pemko, Zero, NGP, Legacy and our own Barzen line, for hollow metal, wood, aluminum storefront and glass doors. Start with where the gap is: the bottom of the door, the sides and top, or the meeting edge between two doors. Most seals ship in 36 in. or 84 in. lengths or cut to your door size. Gap at the bottom of the door
The gap under the door is where most drafts, light, dust and water get in. A Door Sweep screws to the face of the door and is the easiest fix (Pemko 307, Zero 39, Barzen SRM20; 262 to choose from, rubber, brush, bronze or mortised). A Door Shoe wraps the bottom edge in a U-shaped channel with a drip edge, for exterior doors that take rain (Pemko 210, 216, 221). An Automatic Door Bottom hides inside or along the bottom of the door and drops its seal only when the door closes, so there is no drag on carpet and no gap when shut; it is the standard for sound-rated and fire-rated doors (Pemko 411 and 4131, Zero 360, 179 models). For a sectional or roll-up door, use a Garage Door Bottom Seal.
Gap at the sides and top of the door
Perimeter Weatherstripping seals the jamb and head. Kerf-mounted bulb seals push into the slot in a pre-hung frame; surface-mounted silicone, neoprene and pile strips screw or stick to the stop (Barzen WA10 adhesive silicone strip, Barzen WB10 pile brush for glass doors, Pemko S88, Zero 188, 181 products). Door Gaskets are the heavier version for hollow metal and fire-rated frames: aluminum or bronze housings with a silicone, neoprene or sponge seal, tested for smoke and sound (Pemko S88, Zero 188 and 770, NGP, 255 products). Adhesive weatherstrip is the quick retrofit; screw-on gaskets are what a contractor specifies.
Gap between two doors
A pair of doors leaks at the meeting edge. Meeting Stile seals and Astragals close that gap: surface-mounted astragals that overlap the inactive leaf, flat meeting stile seals with a bulb or brush, and security astragals that cover the latch (Pemko 303, Zero 383 and 429, Barzen SRM10, 156 products).
Sound, fire, smoke and water
For sound, pair an Automatic Door Bottom with a full perimeter gasket; that combination is what acoustic door ratings are tested with. For fire and smoke, use INTUMET and Fire Stop seals that expand in heat, and smoke gaskets labeled for your frame. For rain, add a Rain Drip above the door and a Door Shoe below, and see our Door Thresholds. For water that comes in at the sill during a storm, see Flood Barriers.
Special doors and odd gaps
Seals For Metal Doors fit hollow metal frames without drilling. Seals For Glass Doors stick to or clip onto frameless and storefront glass. Excessive Gap Solutions carry 2 in. to 3 in. seals for doors that were cut too short or floors that slope. Insert Replacements are the rubber, silicone and brush inserts that slide into an existing aluminum housing when only the seal is worn out, and Sample Systems let you try a seal profile before ordering a building's worth.
Brands and lengths
Pemko, Zero International and NGP (National Guard Products) are the three main US makers of commercial door weatherstripping and this department carries their full lines. Legacy Manufacturing covers the economy end. Barzen is Trademark Hardware's own brand: sweeps, adhesive weatherstrip, brush seals for glass doors and rain drips, made to our spec and usually the lowest price for the same profile. Most seals come in 36 in. and 84 in. lengths; many are cut to the size you enter, and quick-ship items leave the same day.
Door seal questions
Which door seal do I need? Find the gap first. Bottom of the door: a door sweep or automatic door bottom. Sides and top: perimeter weatherstripping or a door gasket. Between two doors: an astragal. Then match the seal height to the gap, about 1/8 in. taller than the gap so it compresses without dragging.
My door seal is worn out. Do I replace the whole thing? Usually not. On Pemko, Zero and NGP housings the insert slides out and a new one slides in; see Insert Replacements. Replace the whole seal only if the aluminum housing is bent or the screws have pulled out.
What is the difference between a door gasket and weatherstripping? Weatherstripping is the general term for any strip that seals the perimeter. A door gasket is the commercial version: a rigid aluminum or bronze housing holding a silicone or neoprene seal, screwed to the frame stop, and tested for smoke and sound. Adhesive weatherstrip is lighter, cheaper and easier to replace.
Do door seals help with noise? Yes, if the whole perimeter is sealed. An automatic door bottom plus a perimeter gasket is what an acoustic door is tested with; a sweep alone helps with drafts but not much with sound.
