Door Stopper or Door Holder? Which one is right for me?

Jun 4, 2023

Simple - A door stopper, stops the door from hitting the wall or furniture saving you the grief of holes or dents in your wall and/ or damaged or nicked furniture.

A door Holder will hold the door open so that it does not close. This is very useful when you expect crowds to pass thru the door way or when you are bringing multiple packages through the doorway and for other reasons.

So these are seemingly 2 different functions. However there are some combo models that act as both. Meaning some door holders can also be set to allow the door to stop at a certain point. Additionally some door stoppers are fitting with hooks or magnets allowing them to be used as door holders too.

As an example see this door stopper that is mounted to a wall or basebord like any other in addition it has a hook. So you would install the hook catcher on the door which allows you to keep the door open by using the hook on the door stop.

A similar idea would be something like this Emtek magnetic door stopper. Keep in mind that while the magnetic door stop does prevent the door from damaging the wall it's main function is as a door holder as the magnet is deployed by default vs the door stop with a hook that is primarily used a s a door stop with the hook being deployed only when necessary.

Then there are stand alone Door Stops which fall into 3 basic categories

  1. Wall Mounted - These are usually mounted to a wall at the area where the door handle would usually come in contact with the wall. These usually have a plate with a half rubber ball in them to absorb the force of the door handle. Following are links to a few such door stopper.

  2. Baseboard Mounted - These are the most popular ones and are attached to the bottom of the wall usually the baseboard. These come in a variety of options. Following are links to a few different styles.

  3. Floor Mounted - These door stops are mounted to the floor and are very popular. Advantages of using floor mounted over baseboard or wall mounted is that you can mount it further in stopping the door earlier than wall mount can. Not always is there a wall as in the case in bathrooms or furniture. Disatvanteges are obviously the fact that something is sticking out of the floor. Following are links to some of the popular floor mounted door stop designs.

All the above mentioned are standard popular door stops. These are not to be confused with Door Closers, which can technically be used as door stops too as they can be set to open to a certain point only. However they are usually used in commercial areas as they help keep doors closed. You can find a full line of door closers here.
