Understanding Metals and Finishes

Our products are available in a large array of finishes, helping you achive a customized look for your space. Most finishes comply with industry standards to ensure uniformity between products, even when purchased from different manufacturers. See each manufacturers finish charts for additional information:

Aluminum Mill Finish

Aluminum Mill Finish is plain smooth aluminum as it comes from the mill, without a coating. Mill finish can often appear dull, grainy and without luster since it is not polished upon exiting the mill. It is used in casings that will be fully mortised, where an aesthetic appeal is not necessary, and many other applications.

Aluminum Anodized Finish

Anodizing is an electrolytic process that applies a corrosion and wear resistant coating to the aluminum for longer wear and color maintenance. Color can be applied and sealed into the aluminum due to its porous nature. Anodized aluminum has a durable surface that will not peel, chip or flake and has easy maintenance. It can easily be cleaned with household detergent and water without affecting the color. All Zero's anodized products are anodized to 204 (dipped four times)!

Bronze Mill Finish

Bronze extrusions are actually a brass alloy, technically known in the industry as architectural bronze. It is a solid bronze piece, which increases longevity and aesthetics, thus the large increase in price. It is furnished with a mill finish, a light golden color, which oxidizes over time to a rich darkened bronze. It is typically used for high end luxury applications, such as upscale hotels and luxury condos.

 Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel does not corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does. However despite the name, it is not fully stain-proof, most notably, under low oxygen, high salinity or poor circulation environments. Stainless steel is used both when properties of steel and resistance to corrosion are required. Its low maintenance and familiar luster make it an aesthetically appealing and ideal material for many applications.

Zinc is a silvery white metal with a long-lasting and maintenance free life. It is a natural metal that does not fade, is non-corrosive and environmentally friendly with 100% clear water run-off, making it a popular choice for building owners and architects.

   Galvanized Metal

Galvanizing is a great way to prevent rusting. The metal is hot-dipped into molten zinc. Galvanized products have great rust resistance since the coatings are metal which are stronger and harder and thicker than paint. Life of the coating is directly proportional to the thickness

PemKote™ Finish

PemKote™ is a rugged abrasive finish of nickel-aluminum composite made by Pemko which is fused to the metal surface by an exothermic reaction. This process produces an aesthetically pleasing skid resistant coating with extremely high bond strength and excellent resistance to oxidation. It provides safety in environments used by youths and people with disabilities. Pemkote™ carries a TEN (10) YEAR GUARANTEE.
